Slow news day

It's a slow news day, so here's something tangentially related to GW - William Frawley, who previously was the dean of GW's Columbian School College, was fired from his job as president from the University of Mary Washington after getting a DUI. That's a shame, as the man seems to have some issues, and he did a fine job at GW from everything I've heard.

Now I don't want to make light of this, but "University of Mary Washington"? That sounds backwards to me. It's not the University of George Washington or the University of Johns Hopkins. It used to be called Mary Washington College, and Mary Washington University sounds much more normal. Maybe if "Mary Washington" were the name of a town or something it'd make sense, but no. For example, see Robert Morris, Sarah Lawrence, William Jewell, Christopher Newport, James Madison, and on and on for colleges named for dudes (and chicks) that don't have "Of".

It's Columbian COLLEGE, not Columbian School!

The original charter in 1821 said "Columbian College in the Distict of Columbia" and it is now the "Columbian College of Arts & Sciences" of The George Washington University.

You're right, thought it was called Columbian School when I graduated in 2002. I think it changed a year or two later.
